All Aboard for the Molar
Express!
The first stop for
Surgeon General Ana Viamonte Ros on her 3 P’s Tour in Leon County was
the Dental Clinic at 912 Railroad Avenue, a block away from the old
Amtrak station. The Molar Express is the unassuming home to
groundbreaking research and best practices.
In 2005, our
dentists identified a cluster of more than 50 children who were losing
bone around their teeth for no apparent reason. The disease is known as
“aggressive periodontitis” and has no known cause or cure. We are
presently working with the Department of Periodontics at the University
of Florida College of Dentistry to understand the etiology of the
disease and find an effective treatment. This is the only study of this
disease taking place in the United States and possibly the world.
The next stop for
Dr. Viamonte Ros and Deputy Secretary Lillian Rivera was the Roberts and
Stevens Clinic, where they met many staff and community members. Leon
County Health Department staff hosted an open house for their partners
to get acquainted with the new surgeon general.
All our first
responder agencies attended. Many colleagues turned out, including
members from the faith community, local charities, government agencies,
and other health care provider groups. More than 30 nursing students
came from the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and from
Florida State University. Representative Loranne Ausley spoke to the
crowd about her commitment to children’s health care.
Program displays
lined the halls of the Leon County Health Department, documenting the
many initiatives the staff is involved in. Public Health Preparedness
put up one of their tents used for decontamination and gave guided tours
of the tent, explaining the process.
In honor of
September as Preparedness Month, the group is also helping the Leon
County Health Department’s clients and colleagues prepare for a disaster
by having a giveaway of six backpacks filled with supplies like weather
radios, lanterns, first aid kits, etc.
Health Department
staff and partners all enjoyed meeting Dr. Viamonte Ros. Her
friendliness and sincerity were obvious to all, as was her genuine
interest in what we do and how we accomplish it.
