Dr. Ana Viamonte Ros, Florida's Surgeon General, and Lillian Rivera, Deputy
Secretary of Health visited the Polk County Health Department on Monday,
October 15, 2007 to promote the Surgeon General’ s 3 P’s (Prevention,
Preparedness, and Personal Responsibility).
While
touring the largest health department clinic site in Lakeland they spoke
with staff in the busy pediatric, medical, Dental, immunization, Healthy
Start, Pharmacy, and WIC clinics. At every step along the way, the
Surgeon General and Deputy Secretary provided insight, encouragement and
words of wisdom to our dedicated public health professionals.
Environmental Health and Engineering provided presentations on the
importance of protecting our natural environment and developing
strategies to shape the future growth of our communities in an effort to
promote healthy lifestyles. After touring the facility, Dr. Viamonte
Ros and Ms. Rivera attended a meet and greet session over lunch in
Lakeland.
Community
preparedness and memories of three hurricanes were revisited at lunch
with representatives from the Polk County Commission, Bartow Regional
Medical Center, Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine, health department staff
from Health Promotion and Preparedness, Nursing, Office of the Director,
and WIC. Further discussions focused on community partnerships, Medicaid
Reform, the positive impact of Polk's health sales tax, and the future
of public health.
Our staff
appreciates the time Dr. Viamonte Ros and Ms. Rivera took from their
busy schedules to visit Polk County, 2007 All American County.
